Jamaat-e-Islami has welcomed the possible new date for the 13th parliamentary elections announced by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
In a statement on Friday, its Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said the nation is "assured" by the chief advisor's announcement.
He said the nation hopes the government will take all necessary measures to ensure a fair and acceptable election is held within the stipulated time.
Yunus said in his address to the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, “After reviewing the ongoing reform activities related to justice, reform, and elections, I am announcing that the next national election will be held any day in the first half of April 2026."
Since last December, the chief advisor has consistently mentioned the timing of the election would depend on the extent of the reforms.
If certain key reforms are completed, elections could be held as early as December. If additional reforms are implemented, the polls could take place by June of 2026.
Yunus also said elections would not be held any later than June.
At a media briefing on Tuesday, Shafiqur said the elections could be held in mid-February next year, before Ramadan.
He said, “The interim government will be able to bring Bangladesh back to a fair democratic system based on the nation's strong aspirations of reform, justice, and elections, and by formulating and implementing the July Charter.”
