Firefighters have brought a blaze under control at the Sajek Valley tourist hub in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari Upazila, authorities said.

The fire was contained around 4:30pm on Monday, according to Fire Service Central Media Cell official Anwarul Islam Dolon.

Moti Joy Tripura, joint general secretary of the Sajek Resort and Cottage Owners’ Association, also confirmed the development.

However, Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer, or UNO, Shirin Akter said the fire destroyed at least 50 to 60 establishments, including cottages, resorts, homes, and shops.

Earlier, Indrajit Chakma, finance secretary of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners' Association, said the fire started behind Montana Resort around 1pm.

Fire official Anwarul Islam also said they received reports of the Sajek fire at 1:05pm on Monday.

Moti said, “By around 4:30pm, the fire was somewhat under control but not fully extinguished. Firefighters have joined locals in the effort.”

UNO Shirin said, “An air force helicopter is being brought in to douse the fire, and it is expected to arrive by 5:30pm.”
