Four individuals injured in the July Uprising have attempted suicide by ingesting poison during a meeting at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka, according to police and hospital officials.
Imamul Haque, chief of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, confirmed the incident took place on Sunday afternoon.
The individuals—identified with single names as Shimul, Maruf, Sagar, and Akhtar Hossain—were transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where they are currently in stable condition.
Dr Khair Ahmed Choudhury, director of the National Institute of Ophthalmology, said the incident occurred during a meeting with the newly appointed CEO of the July Foundation.
The four reportedly tried to speak with the CEO but were asked to wait until he had finished his discussion with hospital officials.
The suicide attempt followed shortly after.
Dr Khair Choudhury said one of the individuals had previously received medical treatment in Singapore, and suggested that the group may be struggling with mental health issues.
“Those who attempt suicide are not mentally well,” he said, adding that the act may have been a form of protest intended to draw the government's attention or influence the new leadership at the July Foundation.
All four are undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital and remain under medical observation.
