Two men have been killed in an explosion while repairing an air conditioning unit at a private bank in Narayanganj's Sonargaon Upazila.

The incident took place around 1pm on Sunday at the Kanchpur branch of Eastern Bank, according to Jahangir Alam, senior officer at the local fire station.

The victims were identified as 25-year-old Md Tuhin from Chandpur and 22-year-old Md Rafi from Lakshmipur.

The branch is located in a six-storey building known as Sonargaon Mega Complex next to the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.

According to security personnel, three workers were repairing an AC unit at the back of the building's ground floor when the explosion occurred.

Two workers were burnt in the blast, while the other, who was farther away, remained unharmed. The Fire Service was immediately alerted and they rushed the injured workers to the hospital.

As a result of the explosion, the bank suspended all operations, including customer transactions, security personnel said.

Fire Service officer Jahangir said that the workers were repairing the AC compressor when the blast occurred, injuring two of them.

They were rushed to Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital, where a doctor declared them dead.
