Website using bdnews24.com’s logo spreads fake news on finance advisor

A fraudulent website mimicking bdnews24.com has surfaced, spreading fake news about Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed.

The website, which illegally uses bdnews24.com’s logo, has been shared on Facebook.

The false report has caught the advisor’s attention, who condemned it as "fabricated, false, and fictional" propaganda by an "anti-state group”.

A Facebook page named Leandrea Mctizic shared the misleading news, using bdnews24.com’s branding.

The post links to a website with the URL denver-roofing.com, which attempts to replicate bdnews24.com’s interface.

However, the link denver-roofing.com currently leads to a blank page.

The fake report, titled "Central Bank of Bangladesh sues Salehuddin Ahmed over statements he made on live television," is written in English.

Although the report displays bdnews24.com’s masthead, inconsistencies in its design make the forgery evident.

The ticker headlines suggest the fraudulent content was created on Wednesday.

The Leandrea Mctizic Facebook page’s profile photo contains the words Blue and Live Easy.

Its cover photo features images of smartphones, and the listed phone number includes China’s country code.

Facebook users have engaged with the post, with one, Rashed Majumder, commenting: "Now my wall is showing fake news made for money."

According to Who.is, a domain information website, denver-roofing.com was registered under GMO Internet Group on Apr 23, 2024.

The domain was last updated on Nov 30, 2024, and is set to remain active until Apr 23, 2025.

The contact number associated with the registration carries Japan’s country code.

The domain is currently marked as inactive.

A bdnews24.com spokesperson said: "We are aware of this fraudulent use of our logo and fake website. We are considering taking action."

Speaking to bdnews24.com, Salehuddin Ahmed said he was "shocked" upon seeing the fake report.

"At first, I was surprised that bdnews24.com would publish something like this! But upon investigation, I realised it was not bdnews24.com. This is fabricated, false, and fictional information being spread using a fake domain in my name."

"This is a criminal act by all means. I am deeply disturbed. The misuse of the internet for such dishonest purposes is unacceptable,” he said.

“The group spreading these lies against the government and the finance ministry is an enemy of Bangladesh. Their attempts to tarnish Bangladesh’s reputation, both at home and abroad, will never succeed," he added.
