Jashore has recorded its first COVID-19-related death in nearly three years, marking a potential resurgence of the virus in the district.

Sheikh Amir Hossain Paru, 68, of Jahurpur in Bagharpara Upazila, died in the early hours of Wednesday while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Jashore General Hospital, said hospital superintendent Dr Hossain Shafayet.

This is the district's first reported fatality from the virus since mid-2022.

According to ICU in-charge Dr Robiul Islam Tuhin, Sheikh Amir had been admitted to the hospital’s surgery department on Jun 5 with kidney-related complications. As he began exhibiting respiratory distress and other symptoms, doctors suspected a COVID infection.

He was moved to the ICU on Monday evening, where he tested positive for the virus. His condition deteriorated rapidly due to underlying health issues, and he passed away around 6am on Wednesday.

Dr Tuhin added that three more patients with COVID-like symptoms are currently under observation in the ICU. Their samples have been sent for testing. Meanwhile, one confirmed COVID-positive patient is being treated in the hospital’s isolation ward.

The civil surgeon's office confirmed the death as the first in a potential second wave of infections in Jashore. The last COVID death in the district occurred nearly three years ago.

“After a prolonged decline, COVID-19 cases appear to be rising again,” said Dr Shafayet. “Elderly patients and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly vulnerable.”
