Dhaka University’s fact-finding committee has named Chhatra League leaders Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Ali Asif Inan among 128 students allegedly behind the violence on campus from Jul 15 to Aug 5 during the Anti-discrimination Movement.
The list includes the names of banned organisation Chhatra League's Central President Saddam, General Secretary Inan, and Dhaka University President Mazharul Kabir Shayon.
The decision to temporarily expel the students came at an emergency syndicate meeting on Monday, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan.
Dhaka University formed the fact-finding committee on Oct 8, 2024, to probe the violence
The committee said it had found evidence of involvement in attacks against over a hundred students of Dhaka University.
The list includes names of different university hall leaders of Chhatra League, as well as some outsiders.
‘INCOMPLETE’ LIST
University authorities, however, said the list was incomplete and more investigation would be needed for a conclusive one
A statement from the university's Office of the Public Relations said a committee headed by former chemistry professor Tajmeri S Islam was formed to look deeper into the matter.
The committee will review the list of 128 people and seek information from those involved in violence across the university's halls, departments, and institutes during the Uprising.
After verifying the information, it will submit a full report to give clarity on what action should be taken.
A group of students protested after the list bearing 128 names was published, alleging that it had omitted the names of “identified terrorists”.
On Tuesday, they took out a procession outside the administrative building demanding the list be revised and the list of attackers completed.
Mosaddek Ali Ibne Mohammad, a student of the university's Bangla department, said: “Thousands of Chhatra League leaders and activists have bled students in front of our eyes. The students have pictures and videos of many of them.”
Dhaka University Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed said: “This is not the final list of expulsions. It has been initially approved by the syndicate based on the report of the fact-finding committee.”
He said he would tell Jagannath University authorities about the two names in the list from that university, and take action against the Chhatra League activist identified from Patuakhali through the administration there.
