The High Court has ordered Barguna's deputy commissioner and superintendent of police to ensure the safety of a child “rape victim” and her family. Authorities in Magura have similarly been directed to take measures to protect the elder sister of a child who died after she was raped.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury issued the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition on the matter. The application was filed as a supplement to an earlier writ petition that had sought an order to remove photos and videos of the child from Magura circulating online.
Lawyers Hamidul Mishbah and Syed Mahsib Hossain presented the petition in court.
After the ruling, Hamidul said that the Department of Social Services had been asked to oversee the implementation of the security measures.
On Mar 4, a 14-year-old child from Barguna Sadar was allegedly raped while returning home from a private lesson. The victim's father subsequently filed a case against the two suspects the next day.
Since then, it has been alleged that the accused have been pressuring him to withdraw the case. A week later, on Mar 11, the police recovered the plaintiff's body from behind his house.
Various political and social organisations have protested outside the Barguna deputy commissioner's office over the incidents.
Meanwhile, in Magura, an 8-year-old child was raped and abused while visiting her elder sister's house on Mar 6, an incident that sparked nationwide uproar.
After undergoing treatment for a few days, the child died on Mar 13 at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
The child’s mother filed a rape and attempt to murder case against four people at Magura Sadar Police Station on Mar 8. The accused are the child's brother-in-law Sojib Hossain, 18, his father Hitu Mia, 42, a minor, 17, and their mother Jabeda Begum, 40.
According to the case records, Hitu ‘raped’ the child with help from Sojib and Jabeda. The teenage boy allegedly knew about it. An attempt was made to kill the child to cover up the incident. All the suspects are currently in jail.
