A man has tried to take his own life after hacking his wife to death and injuring their two minor daughters by throwing them on the floor during a domestic dispute in Kushtia's Sadar Upazila.
The incident occurred in the Upazila’s Harisankarpur around 9:30pm on Tuesday, Kushtia Model Police Station chief Mosharraf Hossain said.
The assailant was identified by a single name as Mamun, a local resident who works as a painter. His wife, 30-year-old Meghla Khatun, died from her wounds, while their two children, aged 4 and 2, have been admitted to Kushtia General Hospital.
According to police and witnesses, Meghla was allegedly having an affair with a local youth and the two had travelled to Dhaka together a few days ago. Later, she came back to her husband's home and an argument between the couple ensued.
At one stage of the altercation on Tuesday night, Mamun indiscriminately stabbed Meghla with a sharp object. He also tried to kill their two children by hurling them onto the ground.
Mamun later tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself around the neck. Local residents rescued the four and sent them to Kushtia General Hospital. The on-duty doctor there declared Meghla dead around midnight.
The hospital’s physician Rajib Hasan said, “Two people in a bloodied state and two unconscious children were brought to the hospital around 9:30pm on Tuesday. The woman died during treatment. The others are still in critical condition."
OC Mosharraf said: "The man killed his wife and attempted to murder his two daughters after a domestic dispute. The man later attempted suicide. Police are investigating the matter."
