Woman, daughter burnt as gas leak ignites kitchen fire in Dhaka

One of them is in critical condition with burns on 88 percent of her body

Two women have suffered burns in a fire sparked by the accumulation of gas in their kitchen in Dhaka’s Paltan.

They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery following the incident around 1:30pm on Monday. One of them in critical condition, according to doctors.

The victims have been identified as Hosne Ara, 62, and her daughter, Taslima Sultana.

Doctors said that 88 percent of Hosne Ara’s body was burnt, while Taslima suffered burns on 2 percent of her body.

Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute’s emergency department, said: “The victims suffered burns in a fire that erupted in their kitchen. Hosne Ara is in critical condition and has been admitted to the High Dependency Unit.”

A senior nurse at the emergency department told bdnews24.com, “As far as we know, they went into the kitchen to cook when the fire broke out.

“One of them is in grave condition, while the other received primary treatment and was discharged,” the nurse said.
