The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) have arrested former state minister for planning Shamsul Alam.

He was arrested from Dhaka's Mohammadpur early on Thursday morning, the DMP said in a statement.

He is named in several cases filed over the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, but police have yet to confirm in which case he was arrested.

Shamsul joined the cabinet as a technocrat in July, 2021.

A former member of the general economy division of the Planning Commission, Shamsul was honoured with the Ekushey Padak in economics.

Following a 35-year teaching career at Bangladesh Agricultural University, he was deputised as a member of the Planning Commission on Jul 1, 2009. He served there until Jun 30, 2021 on contract.

The Awami League made Shamsul Alam a member of its Advisory Council on May 24, 2022.
