Police have arrested a rural doctor over allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (SM) in Chattogram’s Banshkhali Upazila.

The accused, Prabir Chowdhury, was detained on Monday from the Paschim Chambal area of the Upazila, police said.

Banshkhali police chief Saiful Islam said: “On Monday, Prabir allegedly made offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SM) in front of an individual, who later lodged a formal complaint with police, leading to Prabir’s arrest.”

According to witnesses, locals launched protests near Prabir’s house after word of his alleged blasphemy had spread. Later local Upazila administration officers, accompanied by members of the law-enforcing agencies, took Prabir into police custody.

In the evening, protesters gathered outside the police station. A case was filed over the matter where Prabir was shown arrested that night.
