The joint forces have launched an operation to rescue five students of Chittagong University (CU) who went missing in Khagrachhari.

The rescuers have been conducting a drive in Madhupur, Pankhaiya Para, Chabai Sarak and Noapara in the district since early Friday morning, said Md Arefin Jewel, superintendent of Khagrachhari police.

During their patrols in these localities, the joint forces questioned suspicious people.

“We’re trying to rescue the abductees. In addition, we've set up searches at Khagrachhari-Chattogram, Khagrachhari-Dhaka and Khagrachhari-Rangamati routes. The drive will continue,” he said.

On Wednesday, five university students were abducted from Giriful in the district Sadar on their way to Chattogram from Khagrachhari.

Among the missing are Rishan Chakma, a student of the Department of International Relations at CU and a member of the university's Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) unit and four of his friends: Maitrimoy Chakma from the university’s Department of Fine Arts, Dibby Chakma from the Department of Dramatics, Longi Mro from the Department of Zoology and Aldrin Tripura, another student of fine arts.

All the students are from the 2023-24 academic batch.

Khagrachhari police chief Abdul Baten Mridha said, “No case has yet been filed over the incident.”

The PCP, backed by the Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS), has accused the Prasit Khisa faction of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) of the abduction.

Angya Marma, the district coordinator of UPDF, denied the allegations.

The PCP, hill students from different educational institutions, family members and relatives of the abductees have demanded their safe and unconditional return.
