The Ministry of Education has renamed 24 government schools bearing the names of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members.
On Jun 4, the Secondary and Higher Education Department (SHED) of the ministry issued a notification changing the names of the institutions.
In the notification signed by Deputy Secretary Rahima Akhter, the SHED said that the names of the institutions have been changed in line with the instructions from the Cabinet decision implementation monitoring branch on Feb 9.
Accordingly, Banshkhali Government Bangabandhu High School in Chattogram has been renamed Banshkhali Government High School, Gomra Bangabandhu Government High School in Rangunia has been renamed Gomra Government High School, Rubirhat Bangabandhu Government High School in Noakhali’s Sonaimuri has been renamed Rubirhat Government High School, Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat Government Secondary School in Barishal Sadar Upazila has been renamed Ruptoli Government Secondary School, and Shaheed Arju Monini Government Secondary School in the same Upazila has been renamed Kaunia Government Secondary High School.
Arju Moni was the wife of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, the nephew of Sheikh Mujib.
The name of Fazilatunnesa Government Girls' High School in Dinajpur’s Parbatipur has become Tajumuddin Government Girls' High School, the name of Bangabandhu Government High School in the same Upazila has been changed to Parbatipur Government High School, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government High School in Panchagarh’s Debiganj is now Chilahati Pramanikpara Government High School, Sheikh Russel Government High School in the same Upazila has become Tepriganj Hazirhat Government High School, the name of Sheikh Russel Government High School in Jamalpur’s Melandaher has become Chini Tola Government High School, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government Girls' High School in Habiganj’s Bahubali is now Bahubali Model Government Girls' High School, Shaheed Sheikh Russel Government High School in Dhaka’s Lalbagh has become Hazaribagh Government High School, Sheikh Jamal Government Secondary School in the same area is now Kamrangirchar Government Secondary School, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government Secondary School in the Dhaka Cantonment has been changed to Dhaka Airport Government High School, and the Jurain Sheikh Kamal Government High School in Dhaka’s Shyampur has been renamed Jurain Government High School.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Government High School in Gazipur’s Kaliakoir has been renamed Chandra Government High School, Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Government Pilot Girls High School in Madaripur’s Shibchar has been renamed Shibchar Mainakati Government Pilot Girls High School, Bangabandhu Smriti Government High School in the Gopalganj Sadar Upazila has been renamed Matla Government Secondary School, the Sheikh Russell Government High School in the same Upazila has been renamed Government Zila School, the Bangabandhu Smriti Government Girls High School in Tungipara has been renamed Tungipara Government Girls High School, the Charbhaga Bangabandhu Government Adarsh High School in Shariatpur’s Bhedarganj has been renamed Charbhaga Government Adarsh High School.
The Government Bangabandhu Girls' High School in Bagerhat’s Fakirhat will now be known as Noapara Government Secondary Girls' School, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Memorial Govt School and College in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon will now be known as Chairbaria Government High School and College, and the Sheikh Hasina Government Girls' High School and College in Gopalganj will now be known as Gopalganj Government Girls' High School and College, the SHED said.
On Apr 13, the names of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and members of her family had been removed from 16 technical educational institutions and on Apr 24, 16 schools, three schools and colleges and two colleges -- a total of 21 educational institutions -- were renamed as well.
The interim government has also previously removed the names of Bangabandhu, Hasina and Awami League leaders from 63 government primary schools, 13 universities, 6 medical colleges and 14 hospitals.
