At least nine people, including a child and several farmers, have been killed in lightning strikes in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj districts.

According to local police and residents, the incidents occurred in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar and Akhaura Upazilas, and in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab, Kuliarchar, and Karimganj Upazilas during sudden thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased in Brahmanbaria include Abdur Razzak, 35, of Chanpur village in Sarail; Shamsul Huda, 65, a farmer from Gokarna village, Nasirnagar; Jakia, 7, a child identified with a single name from Kachua village in Nasirnagar; Selim Mia, 60, of Ruti village, Akhaura; and Zakir Khan, 22, of Bongoj village, Akhaura.

Witnesses said Razzak was killed on the spot while harvesting paddy in Tekanagar. Shamsul died while working in a crop field near an embankment in Gokarna, and young Jakia was struck while playing at her aunt’s home in Kachua.

In another incident, Hamida Begum, 50, lost consciousness while drying paddy in Bholakut union. Doctors at Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex said her throat was burned and referred her to the district hospital for advanced treatment.

Zakir and Selim were killed in separate incidents in Akhaura; Zakir while heading to the field with a harvester, and Selim while working on his own land.

Akhaura Police Station chief Md Chomiuddin confirmed the deaths of two and Nasirnagar Police Station chief Khairul Islam the deaths of three. They said officers had been sent to the affected areas.

In Kishoreganj, four people were killed in similar lightning strikes.

Karimganj Police Station chief Mahbub Morshed confirmed the death of Hadis Mia, 32, who was struck while working in a chili field near his home in Saguli village.

In Bhairab’s Srinagar village, Faisal Mia, 28, and Faruk Mia, 65, were killed, as was Kabir Mia, 25, in Kuliarchar’s Hajarinagar village.

Another man, Abu Bakar, 60, was injured in Hossainpur’s Araibaria village.

Locals said the storms began around 3pm, catching many farmers in the fields.

The injured were rushed to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, where three were declared dead on arrival.

Dr Umme Habiba Jui of the Bhairab Health Complex said all three victims had died before reaching the facility.
