Police have arrested four people attempting to flee after robbing a gold trader’s home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
A group of 20-22 robbers stormed the residence of MA Hannan Azad, owner of Alankar Niketan Jewellers, on Road No 8 in the early hours of Wednesday, according to Dhanmondi Police Station chief Ka Shai Nu.
Some of the gang members wore jackets with “RAB” written on them, while others identified themselves as magistrates and students, said Dhanmondi Police Station chief.
"Sensing something suspicious, the homeowner called the national emergency helpline 999. Police responded immediately, surrounded the house and, with the help of locals, managed to arrest four of them," the OC told bdnews24.com.
The remaining gang members fled the scene, he said, adding that three police officers were injured while trying to apprehend them.
The arrestees have been identified as Forhad Bin Mosharaf, 33, Yasin Hasan, 22, Mobasher Ahmed, 23, and Wakil Mahmud, 26.
The trader’s wife said the fleeing robbers took away some of her gold jewellery and cash.
"We have obtained CCTV footage of the incident, and many of the suspects have been identified. Efforts are underway to arrest them," the OC added.
The four arrested men were presented before a court, with police seeking a seven-day remand for questioning.
The court has set Thursday for the remand hearing.
