Two rival BNP factions have clashed over offering floral tributes to mark International Mother Language Day in Brahmanbaria's Bijoynagar Upazila. Two people were injured in the altercation involving sharp weapons.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at the Shaheed Minar on the Upazila Parishad premises, according to Bijoynagar Police Station chief Md Rowshan Ali.

The injured have been identified as Md Belal, 38, and Jibon Ali. They are receiving treatment at the Bijoynagar Upazila Health Complex.

Witnesses said that the Upazila executive officer, or UNO, was the first to lay a wreath at the Shaheed Minar in the early hours of Feb 21. BNP leaders and activists arrived later, divided into two groups.

One faction was led by supporters of Jamir Dastagir and Imam Hossain, while the other comprised followers of Mohsin Bhuiyan and Shah Alam Mia -- two opposing groups within the Upazila BNP.

A dispute arose over which group would place their wreath first, escalating into a physical confrontation. During the scuffle, two members from the Mohsin-Shah Alam camp were injured.

Attempts to contact BNP leaders for comments were unsuccessful. Calls to Bijoynagar UNO Sadhana Tripura also went unanswered.

"The clash was triggered by a dispute over the order of placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. Two people were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment," said Rowshan.

He added that legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is filed.
