Rezaul Karim Mallick, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has said that security measures across Dhaka have been intensified with increased police presence and heightened levels of intelligence surveillance ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“To ensure a festive and secure environment for Eid, the DMP has taken all necessary measures to provide comprehensive security at homes, institutions, and shopping centres,” Mallick said during a media briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Mintu Road on Saturday.
He added that checkpoints and patrols have been strengthened across the city to maintain law and order during the holidays.
“To prevent any acts of sabotage at financial institutions, shopping malls, railway stations, and bus or launch terminals, DB's intelligence activities have been expanded.”
As part of what he described as a "proactive policing strategy", the DB has spread its surveillance net citywide. He urged the public to inform the DB of any security concerns, noting that collaboration from citizens can help mitigate potential risks.
During the briefing, Mallick also highlighted the DB’s role during Ramadan, saying: “We stood by city residents throughout Ramadan so they could observe it peacefully. Likewise, we’re here to ensure Eid is celebrated in a joyful and safe environment.”
As part of the security measures across Dhaka, 667 patrol teams are working in two shifts across 50 police station areas under the DMP to ensure public safety. As many as 71 police checkposts have been set up at key locations in the capital, while auxiliary forces have been deployed to support uniformed police.
In addition to the regular police, specialised DB teams are also actively patrolling the city.
“Activities around shopping malls, transport hubs, and terminals have been intensified as part of the Eid security plan,” Mallick said.
He added that special operations will be carried out after Eid to ensure that Dhaka residents return home safely and are not subjected to any criminal activities.
“Eight divisions of the DB are conducting operations in strategic areas to arrest muggers, thieves, extortionists, and habitual offenders,” he said.
He reaffirmed the DB’s “zero tolerance” approach to all crimes, big or small.
“As part of proactive policing, DB’s surveillance network has been expanded across the city. We are always ready to ensure foolproof security in Dhaka.”
“The morale of DB officers is stronger than ever, and we are committed to becoming a source of public trust and a real threat to criminals.”
The DB is also monitoring cyberspace to prevent any disinformation campaigns and has taken measures to stop the production and circulation of counterfeit currency ahead of Eid.
Mallick urged shopping mall owners and business establishments to enhance their own security arrangements alongside police deployment and to maintain constant communication with local police stations and outposts.
“If any untoward incident occurs or is anticipated in any area, residential block, or market, please inform the local police or DB immediately.”
“If you have any information about possible sabotage or security threats during Eid, report it to the DB. Your identity will be kept strictly confidential, and immediate action will be taken. The DB is by your side at all times as a symbol of your trust.”
