Three friends riding a motorcycle have been killed when a bus ploughed into their two-wheeler as they were heading back to Shibpur after buying sports equipment from Narsingdi town.
The accident occurred around 11pm on Monday near the Bandaradia Petrol Pump on the Itakhola–Shibpur regional road in Shibpur Upazila, according to Hosne Ara Begum, the duty officer at the local police station.
Two of the victims were identified by their first names as Ashiq, 22, and Opu, 20, while the third was Saiful Islam, 22. All three were residents of Mirzakandi village in Shibpur.
Their friend Obaidul Haque said the trio actively participated in sports. On Monday, they had travelled to Narsingdi on a motorcycle to buy sports gear. But they could not make it back.
The bus sped away after the collision, police and Fire Service said, citing witnesses. All three riders on the motorcycle were critically injured. Locals and Fire Service personnel rushed them to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex.
Ismail, an officer at the Shibpur Fire Service, said: “Upon receiving the report, we went to the scene and took the three injured men to Shibpur hospital. Two of them were declared dead by doctors upon arrival. The third victim was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way.”
Hosne Ara Begum of Shibpur Model Police Station said that legal proceedings were underway. Efforts are ongoing to identify and catch the errant bus.
