A court has approved the arrests of six people, including former ministers Anisul Huq and Qamrul Islam, over the killing of Atiqul Islam in Dhaka’s Kafrul.

Anisul has also been implicated in a separate murder case under the jurisdiction of Mohammadpur Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra approved the prosecution’s request after a hearing on Monday.

Former prime minister's advisor Salman F Rahman, ex-state minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder, and two former inspectors general of police, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and AKM Shahidul Haque, were also shown arrested, according to Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque.

The suspects were brought to court from jail for the hearing on Monday morning. Police then successfully petitioned the court to have them shown arrested in the cases.

According to the case dossier, Atiqul was shot and killed on Jul 19, 2024, near the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, or BRTA, office in Kafrul amid the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

He was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital.

On Dec 23, 2024, businessman Ahsan Habib filed a murder case at Kafrul Police Station.

The case implicates Anisul, Salman as No 6, Qamrul as No 8, Kamal as No 10, Mamun as No 11, and Shahidul as No 27.
