The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has arrested a man, who it says is the "special assistant" to former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, in connection with a murder case during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The accused, SM Kamal Haider, was arrested on Thursday morning, the CID said in a press statement.
The statement, however, did not clarify in which part of Dhaka he was arrested.
During the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, an individual named Abdullah Siddique was shot dead near the Patam Restaurant in Dhanmondi on Aug 4, according to the CID.
"An analysis of testimonies, CCTV footage and other evidence initially proved that SM Kamal Haider was involved in the incident."
He went into hiding after the incident, the statement added.
Taposh, the nephew of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has not been seen in public since the fall of the Awami League government following the mass protests on Aug 5. Speculation is that he left the country earlier.
He is also accused in several cases related to violence and deaths during the student-led movement.
