Former IGP Mamun named in case filed against Hasina at ICT

Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has also been named as an accused in the case filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity in suppressing the July-August protests.

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued the order on Sunday following an application filed by the prosecution.

He represented the prosecution during the hearing on the plea.

Later, the chief prosecutor told journalists: “There is a case against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity, including ‘genocide’, during the July Uprising. She was the sole accused in the case.

“[On Sunday], an application was filed to include Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun as a co-accused and show him as arrested. The tribunal granted the application.”

He said the tribunal’s investigation agency has been permitted to interrogate Abdullah Al-Mamun for one day.

Former IGP Mamun was present at the tribunal during the hearing.

Tajul said, "The then IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was former prime ministe’s right-hand man in executing her command responsibility. That is why he has been strategically included in the case.

“His mobile phone has not been recovered yet, and an investigation is under way," he added.
