Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has visited his mother in India, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

Joy, who resides in the United States, arrived in India shortly before Eid-ul-Azha, which took place on Jun 7. His mother Hasina has been living in exile in New Delhi since the Awami League government fell in August, which she headed as prime minister.

Indian authorities have yet to issue any official remarks regarding the visit, says the Hindustan Times.

An anonymous source with ties to the Awami League told the Hindustan Times that the purpose of his visit is to spend Eid with his mother.

The source also said that Joy is the first visitor Hasina received since she arrived in India almost a year ago.

The sources added that Joy has not scheduled any public appearances during his time in India. They also said that specific details of his travel plans have not been disclosed.

The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, has requested Hasina’s extradition since taking office. However, Indian officials have not yet responded to the request.

Hasina is currently facing multiple criminal charges in Bangladesh. The International Crimes Tribunal has formally accused her for allegedly directing police violence against protesters in the July Uprising.

According to the Hindustan Times, diplomatic relations between the neighbouring countries have soured due to Hasina’s extradition and claims of violence against religious minority communities in Bangladesh.
