A bus driver has been detained in Habiganj’s Nabiganj Upazila for allegedly raping a college student on his vehicle.

He was apprehended in the Upazila's Aushkandi area around 10:30pm on Monday, according to Nabiganj Police Station chief Sheikh Mohammad Kamruzzaman.

The suspect, Md Sabbir Mia, is the son of Chatir Mia from Inatabad Banglabazar in Nabiganj.

According to locals, the girl is a resident of Habiganj's Baniachong Upazila and a student in 11th grade at a college in Dhaka.

On Sunday, she was returning home on a Bilash Paribahan bus from Dhaka’s Farmgate. Although she was supposed to get off at Shayestaganj, she fell asleep and the bus continued on to Sylhet. After reaching Sylhet, she boarded another bus, operated by Maa Enterprise, to return home via Nabiganj.

When the other passengers disembarked, the girl was left alone on the bus. Driver Sabbir and his assistant Liton Mia then allegedly took turns raping her.

As the bus reached the Aushkandi area, the girl began to scream, prompting nearby residents to alert the police and the Army.

When Army personnel arrived at the scene, local residents detained Sabbir and handed him over. However, his aide Liton managed to escape.

The girl and the driver were later handed over to Nabiganj Police Station by the Army.

“The bus driver has been detained for allegedly raping the college student, who has been rescued. We have not been able to catch the assistant Liton, who fled the scene. Legal action will be taken,” said Kamruzzaman.

Police said the fugitive Liton is a resident of Sylhet's Bishwanath Upazila.
