Foreign ministry’s Facebook page hacked, people urged not to believe posts

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that it is conducting maintenance work on its official Facebook page after it was hacked.

"Necessary actions are being taken to investigate the matter and strengthen security measures to prevent any such future untoward recurrence," the foreign ministry said in a press release on Sunday.

The ministry said that it had noted that inappropriate content was shared from the page without proper authorisation.

"For now, everyone is kindly requested not to trust, share, or engage with any posts or messages from the Facebook page until full recovery," it said in the statement.

The foreign ministry’s verified Facebook page was hacked on Saturday evening. Initially, a live broadcast of a gaming site in Indonesian was posted on it. After that, the page was no longer available for some time.

The press release says that the ministry is trying to restore the page, but it did not state who had taken control of it or whether a ransom had been demanded.

The ministry said the issue is being given serious consideration as the page is its most popular social media platform. For now, official updates and communications will be shared through the ministry's other verified platforms, including its official website and press releases.
