A clash and running battles have ensued between BNP and Awami League supporters in Natore’s Lalpur Upazila after ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans were shouted following Eid prayers.

The incident took place on Monday noon in the Ramkrishnapur Chini Bottola area in which one person was shot.

Four BNP supporters and a journalist were also injured.

Lalpur Police Station chief Nazmul Haque said police raided Ramkrishnapur village following the violence and detained nine Awami League supporters for questioning.

Security forces, including the army, brought the situation under control.

The injured have been identified with single names as Sabbir, 24, Sujat, 30, Mohasin, 27, and Zia, 46.

Tushar Imran, 22, a local journalist from Dainik Khola Kagoj, has also been injured.

Witnesses said Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists began shouting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans after Eid prayers at Ramkrishnapur Eidgah.

This led to scuffles with BNP supporters, during which Sabbir, a BNP activist, was injured.

Locals alleged that after tensions eased, Awami League supporters opened indiscriminate gunfire on BNP activists, leaving Sujat wounded.

OC Nazmul said, “Security forces were deployed immediately after the incident, and the situation is now under control. The perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“Action will be taken against those found responsible after verification,” he added.

Efforts are underway to obtain statements from BNP and Awami League leaders on the incident.
