A group of demonstrators have reportedly ransacked Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader’s house in Rangpur and torched a motorcycle outside.
The party’s city unit General Secretary SM Yasir has blamed the attack on members of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizen Party (NCP), calling it a “disgraceful” act.
Leaders of the Anti-discrimination Movement have rejected the claims and, in turn, accused Jatiya Party activists of attacking their peaceful protest.
The attack occurred after 8:30pm on Thursday at Quader’s Sky View residence in Rangpur’s Senpara.
Jatiya Party leaders allege that the demonstrators stormed the house after marching from the city’s Press Club.
Running battles flared after loyalists clashed with protesters near the house.
Police were later deployed outside the house to bring the situation under control.
Quader had arrived in Rangpur from Dhaka earlier in the day.
His visit triggered a protest march by the student movement in the evening.
Before the violence, Quader addressed journalists at his residence, speaking on issues including the interim government and the NCP.
Anti-discrimination activists began their protest around 8pm at the Press Club premises, eventually marching towards Senpara.
The attack followed soon after.
The house’s windowpanes were shattered during the incident. A motorcycle parked in front was vandalised and set alight.
Tension has gripped the neighbourhood since the incident.
Kotwali Police Station cheif Ataur Rahman told bdnews24.com that the situation was under control and officers remained stationed in the area.
Later that night, Jatiya Party Co-Chairman Lebu Mia, district unit General Secretary Abdur Razzak, and city unit President and former mayor Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa visited Quader’s home.
Yasir condemned the incident. “We want to practise peaceful politics. The activists of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the NCP have carried out a disgraceful attack [on Thursday]. We strongly protest and condemn it.”
Imtiaz Ahmed Imti, general secretary of the Anti-discrimination Movement’s Rangpur chapter, dismissed the allegations and instead accused Jatiya Party activists of throwing crude bombs and attacking their peaceful march with locally made weapons.
He said, “The Jatiya Party chairman, a political ally of the Awami League, has come from India. He has not disclosed what happened there. He is here to implement India’s agenda.
“We were attacked while protesting his presence in Rangpur.”
