A hot, hectic day of Haor paddy harvesting

Rows of golden crops, stretching as far as the eye can see, were baking in the sun at the Haor wetlands in Kishoreganj. But farmers, taking advantage of the dry weather, have already started threshing their harvest across vast swathes of the Haors. In some places, farmers are busy boiling paddy on makeshift clay ovens, some are winnowing the paddy traditionally, but many are threshing new paddy using various machines. Despite the scorching summer heat and the ongoing heatwave, farmers are busy harvesting their crop and taking home the produce.

Humayunpur in Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur Upazila has a large stretch of Haor land. After reaping, paddy threshing work is underway on a bit of raised land in the Haor area. A distant golden glow of paddy can still be seen on the edges of one’s vision.

The residents of the Haor area are devoted to the massive work of harvesting paddy. The threshing of crops is underway throughout the day as farmers rush to store the produce at granaries before the rain comes down and the water rises.

Farmers in the Haor areas survive the entire year on the income they get from the once per year Boro paddy harvested. They will have to dry and store the produce at granaries before the flood water. That is why everyone in Humayunpur, regardless of age, is throwing themselves into the harvesting work.

Drying of paddy is underway on a large open swath of land in the Haor area near a village.

Farmers are busy threshing paddy brought in from the fields.

Throughout the day the rice is parboiled and dried at the houses in the Haor area.

After the threshing is complete, women parboil the rice.

A couple removes rice from an oven after parboiling.

After parboiling, the paddy is dried in an open part of the Haor.

Many farmers have already sold their crops, but many others are storing the produce in hopes of getting a better price.

Many farmers complete paddy husking work by bringing a machine from home to store the staple before the Haor starts getting to flood.

Paddy straw is also prepared by drying the paddy husks to meet the food needs of livestock throughout the year.

Seeds sprout as water enters a paddy stack after a sudden rain. A farmer is busy separating the seeded paddy from the stack.
