Police have arrested a couple in connection with the murder of Saifur Rahman Bhuiyan, the acting vice principal of Habibullah Bahar College in Dhaka.

Saifur met the couple at a railway station and brought them to his flat a few days ago. Police are investigating what happened next. They had been living there for several days.

Uttara Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohidul Islam said the couple was arrested as suspects on Tuesday.

A police officer said that at the start of Ramadan, the couple lost their bags at Kamalapur Railway Station and became destitute. Saifur met them there.

“Both the couple are between 20 and 22 years old. Saifur, promising to keep the boy as a driver and the girl as a housekeeper, took them to a rented house in Puranpara, Uttarkhan.

“They stayed there for a few days. He would lock them from outside and leave the house,” he said.

The police officer said the couple harboured anger and resentment toward him, leading them to confess to attacking him with a sharp weapon.

Given his respected status, police plan to verify their statement through multiple means.

Saifur’s body was found in Puranpara, Uttarkhan early on Monday morning.

The deceased's elder brother, Mujahidur Rahman Bhuiyan, said Saifur's family lives in Shantinagar with his wife and two sons.

However, he had heard that Saifur had been staying in a rented house in Uttarkhan for the past few months.

Everyone was aware that Saifur's wife owned two and a half kathas of land in Uttarkhan, which had been encroached upon.

He had mentioned efforts to recover the land three to four months ago.

Saifur’s other brother, Lutfur Rahman Bhuiyan, filed a murder case with the Uttarkhan police station accusing “unknown” individuals.

In the statement, Lutfur said he came to know that a few days ago, an unknown couple were staying in Saifur’s flat.

The statement said, “Between 2am and 4am on Sunday, unknown individuals entered my brother's room, attacked him with sharp weapons, and fled.”
