Police have arrested a fugitive who was sentenced to death over a decade and a half ago for the murder of his wife in Nilhpamari’s Sadar Upazila.

The convict, 68-year-old Abul Kashem, was arrested with the support of the Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday night, according to Inspector MR Sayeed of Nilphamari Sadar Police Station.

Sayeed said he was brought before a court, which sent him to jail on Sunday afternoon.

Kashem was convicted of killing his wife Mosammat Begum Khatun in the town’s Baraipara area on Aug 18, 2007 and burying the body in secret.

Begum Khatun’s elder brother Yasin Ali subsequently filed a case over her murder against Kashem, who had been absconding since the killing.

Police later submitted a chargesheet against him.

On Jan 3, 2021, a court sentenced Kashem to death in absentia, the police official said.
