Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has thanked the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) for seizing assets allegedly linked to former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed.
The appreciation was conveyed during a visit to the United Kingdom, where the governor accompanied Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on an official trip.
A media statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office on Friday confirmed the development.
Governor Mansur expressed hope that the “seizure”, part of a broader UK effort to recover £250 million in illicit assets, would encourage other countries to take stronger measures in tracing and repatriating laundered funds.
A spokesperson for the NCA confirmed Al Jazeera on Thursday that the agency had secured freezing orders against “a number of properties” under civil investigation.
On Jun 11, the governor and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Mohammad Momen visited the NCA’s London office, where they met with senior officials including Daniel Murphy, head of the International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre (IACCC).
Mansur also thanked the IACCC for supporting Bangladesh’s Asset Recovery Taskforce and Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in their efforts to recover stolen assets.
Following the NCA meeting, he took part in a roundtable in London and held discussions with BlackRock, a leading asset management firm, where he highlighted Bangladesh’s economic potential and urged greater investment in the country’s banking and capital markets.
He also met with the Lord Mayor of London Alastair King and top executives from leading fintech companies, inviting them to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh’s financial sector.
The governor extended a formal invitation for the lord mayor to visit Bangladesh.
In addition, he held talks with several money exchange houses in London, exploring ways to make the remittance process more efficient, affordable, and transparent, according to the press release.
