The Election Commission is preparing to hold the 13th parliamentary election in December, Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar has said.
The commission will be able to announce the schedule within a reasonable time after receiving the National Consensus Commission’s results, he told the media at the Election Building in Dhaka's Agargaon on Sunday.
While addressing the nation on the occasion of Victory Day last year, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus promised national elections by December this year or June 2026 among the initiatives to reform various sectors after the fall of the Awami League government.
He, however, hinted in the current month that the general election would be held in December.
Anwarul Islam said, "We are preparing for the election targeting December.”
The election schedule is usually announced up to 45 days in hand.
In that case, the commission also says the schedule must be published in October in order to hold the vote in December.
It added that the reforms to the laws and regulations must be completed by October.
