Savar police have arrested Khalid Mahmud, also known as Hridoy Khan, for making obscene comments about women’s clothing and spreading messages inciting harassment on social media.

Khalid Mahmud appeared in a Facebook video dressed as a mentally unstable person, making indecent comments urging women not to go out without hijab, Dhaka District Police said in a media statement on Monday evening.

He circulated the video online, insulting all women in society, the statement said.

He further claimed that women who do not wear hijab would be “raped” and made multiple offensive remarks against them, it added.

The video, widely shared on social media, showed him making inappropriate comments about young girls, including two Hindu women.

Addressing them, he made vulgar remarks linking hijab and burqa with religious identity, which police believe was an attempt to incite discord between the peacefully coexisting Hindu and Muslim communities.

The statement added, "At the same time, he is spreading a misleading message among mothers and sisters in society, presenting a negative view of women to men.

“Due to this, Savār police arrested him in Aminbazar at 4pm on Monday. Legal action is being taken against him for creating instability in society through such acts."
