The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has reportedly attempted to push 26 people into Bangladesh, including nine children, along two borders in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila.
Commander of Nilphamari-56 BGB battalion Lt Col Sheikh Mohammad Badruddoja said they were detained from the Barabari border and the Khuniapara borders during the wee hours of Tuesday.
The detainees are Farid Hossain, 35, Ashraf Islam, 27, Rani Begum, 20, Arzina, 20, Aturban, 45, Rasna Begum, 30, Abu Taleb, 55, Hasina Begum, 40, Hasen Ali, 29, Hossain Ali, 25, Ariful Ali, 21, Minara Begum, 25, Rina Begum, 23, Jui, 18, Mominul Islam, 35, and Rasheda Begum, 30.
The rest are children and teenagers. They are said to be residents of different areas of Kurigram.
The BGB said the detainees entered India illegally through different borders. They were working in different states of the country.
Recently, Indian police arrested them in Punjab's Haryana. They were brought to Bagdogra Airport and handed over to BSF.
From there, BSF members pushed nine people through the Barabari border and 17 people through the Khuniyapara border, according to the BGB.
Village police noticed them, detained them, and handed them over to members of the Ghagra BOP camp.
On the other hand, members of the Shingroad BOP camp detained 17 people pushed in through the Khuniyapara border. Later, 26 people were handed over to Sadar Police by the BGB.
Panchagarh Sadar Police Station chief Abdullah Hill Zaman said, “For now, they will be assured of safe shelter by talking to the district and Upazila administration.
“However, it is being verified whether they are genuine Bangladeshi citizens or not. Legal action will be taken against them.”
Lt Col Badruddoja said after the incident, a company-level flag meeting was held with the BSF. The detainees were handed over to police after filing a general diary (GD).
The BGB official also said surveillance at the border has been increased.
