Hackers have reportedly infiltrated the server of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), the capital’s development authority, and “authorised” several building plans before the agency shut down its permit system and voided the approvals.
The building approval process was suspended for some time after the hack.
The authority shared the development in a media statement on Thursday night.
According to the statement, a group “hacked” into RAJUK’s ECPS server on Monday. Within 17 minutes, approval for an unauthorised building was detected.
The 15-storey building with 185 units, situated in a wetland and height-restricted zone, had not received permission.
The group managed to get the building plan approved fraudulently, it added.
RAJUK said investigations revealed the group had nearly completed the approval process for three other buildings.
The server was then shut down, and a police report was filed at Motijheel Police Station.
Following the breach, RAJUK traced a blueprint carrying the signature of one Rabeya Bari, an engineer.
On questioning, she identified a man named Md Swapan, an employee at a local computer shop called “Neel Naksha” in Motijheel, as being involved in the incident.
A follow-up raid led by a RAJUK executive magistrate confirmed the unauthorised plan’s link to the targeted building.
The fees for the fake approval had been paid using a credit card belonging to the shop’s owner Enamul, who is identified with a single name.
RAJUK Chairman Riazul Islam described the incident as “unfortunate” and said legal steps would be taken against those responsible.
“Measures will also be put in place to prevent such incidents in future,” he added.
