‘Light to heavy’ rain forecast in Dhaka, elsewhere until Friday

While a persistent heatwave continues to blanket much of the country, rainfall has started to make its way across Dhaka and several other areas, providing temporary relief from the sweltering conditions.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts that this trend will last through Friday, offering hope for cooler days ahead.

Showers swept across several areas in the capital, including Gulshan, Badda, Mohakhali, Agargaon, and near the parliament complex on Monday afternoon, bringing relief to residents.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque told bdnews24.com that rainfall is likely to persist for the next three to four days before easing, after which temperatures are expected to climb again.

“There is rain, more or less, across most parts of the country,” he added. “There will not be much rain in Dhaka, it will remain like this.

“So far, temperatures have not exceeded 31 degrees Celsius anywhere in the country. There is no chance of a heatwave before the fifth or sixth [of May].”

In its regular weather bulletin, the Met Office said that in the next 24 hours from 9am on Monday, parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusty winds along with lightning and rain or thundershowers.

Until 6am on Monday, the highest recorded rainfall was 41mm in Rangpur and Panchagarh’s Tetulia.

Light to moderate rain also fell in a few other areas.

Forecasts suggest daytime temperatures may rise by 1 to 2°C across the country in the coming days, with a slight drop in night temperatures.

On Sunday, mild heatwaves were observed over Gopalganj, Pabna, Sirajganj, Jashore, and Patuakhali.

The day’s highest temperature was recorded in Jashore at 37.4°C.
