The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found two flats, 10 plots, and two houses while investigating the “illegal” assets of Md Mujibur Rahman, former security chief of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and his wife Tasrin Mujib.
Mujibur is one of the senior army officers dismissed following the power change.
ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam told bdnews24.com that the investigation into the couple's “unexplained” wealth had begun.
Based on the findings, the national anti-graft agency has filed a plea to seize their assets and freeze their 16 bank accounts.
ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Sirajul Hoque filed the application with Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Monday, seeking orders to confiscate Mujibur’s immovable assets and restrict transactions involving movable assets.
An ACC official told bdnews24.com that the application also highlighted information regarding “millions of taka transactions” in their 16 bank accounts, along with details of savings certificates and investments in the stock market.
Before his dismissal, Mujibur served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).
He previously held the position of director-general of the Special Security Force (SSF), responsible for the security of the president and prime minister.
A senior ACC official told bdnews24.com that, to date, at least 10 plots have been traced in the names of the Mujibur-Tasrin couple, located in Mirpur, Cantonment, and Khilkhet in Dhaka, as well as in the Purbachal area of Narayanganj’s Rupganj.
They also own a residential building in Rupganj and a tin-roofed house with land in Savar. In addition, there are two flats in Mirpur and Dhaka Cantonment.
Of these, Mujibur owns one flat, two houses, and three plots while Tasrin holds one flat and seven plots.
The Ministry of Defence formally dismissed Mujibur on Sept 10, a month after the Awami League government was ousted in a mass uprising on Aug 5.
Before his role at ARTDOC, Lt Gen Mujibur served as Quarter Master General (QMG) of the Army Headquarters.
The army officer, known for leading “Operation Thunderbolt” after the Holey Artisan terror attack, had also been the additional director-general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Mujibur was later appointed SSF chief, overseeing Hasina’s security and accompanying her on official visits abroad.
He has reportedly been in hiding since Aug 5, 2024.
The ACC official said there are allegations against Mujibur for "misusing power, irregularities, and corruption to embezzle hundreds of millions of taka" while holding key government positions.
In the court application, ACC Deputy Director Sirajul said: "It is crucial to attach the immovable assets of Mujibur Rahman, his wife, and related individuals, as well as block their bank accounts.
“Without attaching these assets or freezing the bank accounts, the state may not be able to recover them during legal proceedings, leading to irreparable loss to the state," he added.
