A suspect in a case over the kidnapping and murder of school student Jishan has fled from police custody at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court.
The suspect was identified as Shariful Islam. He fled the lock-up at the jail at 11:40am on Thursday, according to Sub Inspector Md Ripon Molla of the lock-up.
Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam was to hear testimony in the case on Thursday and suspects Shariful and Shahin Mandul had been brought to court from Kashimpur Central Jail accordingly.
Later, they were taken to the dock. Additional District and Sessions Judge of Jashore and former Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Zakir Hossain Tipu appeared in court to give testimony.
After the testimony, as the suspects were being taken from the second floor of the court to the ground floor lock-up of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court's lock-up, Shariful escaped.
The court's CCTV camera video shows that a policeman on duty was going towards the jail with four suspects with Shariful in front. The constable was walking behind them holding a rope.
When Shariful reached the stairs under the court building, he somehow uncuffed himself and ran. Later, he went to a nearby court. There he took off his white shirt and held it in his hand. He ran from the court while wearing a red T-shirt.
SI Ripon Mollah said, “As the accused was being taken from the court to the lock-up, he hit constable Shahidullah and fled.”
Shariful hails from Haripur village in Dinajpur's Nawabganj Thana.
ADC Main Uddin of the DMP’s prosecution police said, "The suspect was handcuffed. He used a metal object to loosen the handcuffs and slipped them off. He then hit a police constable on the arm and fled."
“We are taking legal action on the matter. The Kotwali Police Station has been informed to arrest the accused. Preparations for a case against him are underway.”
When asked about the incident, Constable Shahidullah, who was in charge of transferring the suspect, said: “My head is not working right now. I will tell you everything later.”
On Jan 19, 2018, Jishan Hossain went to a relative's house in Sipahibagh under Khilgaon Thana at an invitation. He did not return home afterwards. The family searched, but could not find him.
The next day, at around 4am, a message was sent from Jishan's mobile phone to his father Mofazzal Hossain's phone, informing him that his son had been kidnapped. After 30 minutes, he called and demanded Tk 1.5 million for Jishan's release.
Mofazzal filed a general diary with Khilgaon Police Station over the incident. On Jan 23, at around 4:30pm, he received news that the body of a boy of Jishan's age was at Dhaka Medical College.
He went there and identified the boy's body. He learned that Badda police found Jishan's body at a fish farm in Aftabnagar with four bricks tied to is waist a muffer put on it.
