MRT deploys policemen to patrol metro trains for passenger safety

Authorities have deployed MRT Police personnel to enhance security on the Dhaka Metro Rail, with at least two officers stationed inside each train to ensure passenger safety.

The move was made in line with the instructions of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, or DMTCL, according to Deputy Inspector General of MRT Police Siddiqui Tanzilur Rahman.

“MRT Police have been deployed to manage the large crowds, ease passenger concerns and ensure security. This decision was made under the guidance of the new managing director of the DMTCL,” he told bdnews24.com.

“Each train will have two police officers patrolling the compartments to monitor any issues. Additionally, an Ansar member may accompany them for added security,” he added.

A deputy general manager of DMTCL told bdnews24.com, “With Ramadan ongoing and Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, it is essential to ensure passengers' safety and peace of mind. That’s why police have been assigned to the trains. For now, they will continue this duty, but we cannot say for how long.”

Dhaka's first metro rail was inaugurated on Dec 29, 2022, running from Uttara’s Diabari to Agargaon. On May 24, 2023, the government approved the formation of the MRT Police to oversee the security of the mass rapid transit system. The force officially began operations at metro stations and related structures on Oct 9, 2023.

The MRT Police is led by a deputy inspector general and currently operates under the supervision of the Police Headquarters.
