A video showing a man being shoved into a car in broad daylight in Dhaka's Uttara has gone viral on Facebook, sparking public concern.
The video was posted on Friday night by Noman Ahmed Nafiz, a Chattogram University admission seeker.
According to Nafiz, the incident occurred around 2:45pm on Friday on a street opposite the BNS Centre in Uttara. Three men forcibly pushed a pedestrian into a private car.
When bystanders approached in an attempt to intervene, the men turned on them as well. The car then sped off in the direction of the airport.
The video shows two men shoving a man wearing a black mask into a white car. A third man, who was standing nearby, then joined in. Together, they push the masked man into the vehicle.
Within about 18 hours of being posted, the video had drawn reactions from over 1,500 people, received 260 comments, and had been shared by 1,300 users.
“We’ve received the video but haven’t yet confirmed when exactly the incident occurred. I’ve instructed all officers in the division to look into it,” said Deputy Commissioner Mahidul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara Division.
As of Saturday afternoon, Mahidul said that no formal complaint had been filed regarding the incident.
However, Nafiz told bdnews24.com on Saturday that although he went to the local police station with the video footage on his phone, he did not receive any assistance from the police.
“After I described the incident, they took down my name and phone number. I also sent them the video via WhatsApp, but they haven’t even opened it yet. I’ve spoken with my family and relatives and plan to go back to the station today.”
In response to a question, Nafiz said that like others nearby, he had tried to intervene and rescue the man being abducted. But the attackers began assaulting bystanders, at which point he discreetly recorded the video on his phone. He was not able to capture the car’s number plate at the time, but later managed to retrieve it from CCTV footage.
The location of the incident falls under the jurisdiction of Uttara East Police Station.
On whether the police were involved in the incident, station chief Shamim Ahmed said: “We did not carry out any operation in plainclothes, nor did we arrest anyone.”
“Our operations are always conducted by uniformed police officers.”
