DMCH treats over 100 for knife injuries during Eid animal sacrifice

More than a hundred people have been treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after sustaining injuries from sharp tools while slaughtering and butchering sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha.

Mushtak Ahmed, the hospital’s resident surgeon, confirmed that the injured individuals came from Dhaka and surrounding areas throughout the day on Saturday, seeking emergency treatment.

“Most of those who required medical attention were seasonal butchers,” Mushtak said.

“From morning to evening, over a hundred people arrived at our emergency unit with injuries caused by sharp instruments while performing Eid sacrifices.”

He added that while a few patients were admitted, the majority were treated and discharged. Most of the injuries were not life-threatening.

Such accidents are common during Eid-ul-Azha each year, typically caused by a lack of expertise and caution during the slaughtering of sacrificial animals.

Most of the injured were “one-day butchers”: individuals who were attempting to slaughter their own sacrificial animals without professional experience.

Similar incidents were reported from Cumilla and Brahmanbaria, where over 150 people were reportedly injured while carrying out the Eid sacrifice.
