A group of robbers, dressed like law-enforcing officers, carried out a heist at a gold merchant’s house in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, according to police.
The gang, consisting of 25 to 30 members, typically operates by disguising themselves as members of law enforcement, magistrates, journalists, or students, said police.
They used a similar tactic to break into the businessman’s house on Wednesday.
Four members of this group were arrested on Wednesday morning after the incident, while two others were apprehended in the evening, confirmed Md Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna division.
The six arrested are Farhad Bin Mosharraf, 33, Yasin Hasan, 22, Mobassher Ahmed, 23, Wakil Mahmud, 26, Abdullah, 32, and Sumon, 29.
The police have confiscated several items used in the robbery, including two black jackets labelled "RAB," three black caps also marked with "RAB," a microbus, five mobile phones, a metal chisel, an old red sly wrench, and Tk 45,100 in cash.
Early on Wednesday, around 20 to 22 robbers broke into jewellery store owner MA Hannan’s residence on Road 8, Dhanmondi. Some were wearing jackets with "RAB" written on them, while others pretended to be media personnel, magistrates, and students.
However, the homeowner became suspicious and immediately called the national emergency services on 999.
"Upon receiving the call, the police swiftly surrounded the house and managed to capture four of the robbers on the spot," said Masud Alam.
The robbers took Tk 150,000 and 2.5 bhori (equivalent to 29.15 grams) of gold jewellery from Azad’s house. They also broke into the office of "SM Sourcing", located in the same building, and whisked away over Tk 3.5 million from a drawer.
Mohammad Talebur Rahman, DMP deputy commissioner on media and public relations, was asked to comment on how such a large-scale robbery could take place despite “increased” police presence around the city.
He said, “We have a detailed security plan for Ramadan and Eid, which includes increased patrolling in key areas and setting up checkpoints. Whenever an incident occurs, we try to detect it immediately. We are working sincerely, and trying to do our best.”
