A week has barely passed since the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) forced people across the border, and the border patrol of India pushed in another 60 into Bangladesh through the Sylhet and Moulvibazar border.

According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), as many as 44 of them were sent through the Barlekha border in Moulvibazar and 16 through the Kanaighat border in Sylhet on Wednesday morning.

All are currently in BGB custody.

Rafique Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Uttar Shahbajpur Union Parishad in Barlekha, said the BSF pushed the group across the border in the morning. “There are women and children among them,” he said.

He said after speaking with the returnees, he learned they were all Bangladeshi nationals who had been living “illegally” in India.

Locals informed the BGB after the group was detained.

They were later moved to a classroom at Shahbajpur Adarsha Girls’ High School.

Among them are 13 men, 18 women and 13 children.

Islam Uddin, a member of the same Union Parishad, said the detainees told him they had been arrested by Indian police a few days ago and were then handed over to the BSF.

“The detainees said many more people like them are still being held across the border by the BSF,” he added.

Lt Col Mehedi Hasan, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-52, said: “We have confirmed their identities. All of them are Bangladeshi nationals.

“They were handed over to Barlekha Police Station in the evening.”

Barlekha Police Station chief (OC) Abdul Qayyum said, “We will proceed in consultation with the higher authorities.”

Earlier on May 6 and 7, the BSF had pushed over 100 people into Bangladesh through different border points.

Meanwhile, around 8am, 16 more people were pushed into the country through the Atgram border area of Kanaighat Upazila.

Lt Col Md Jubayer Anwar, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-19 in Zakiganj, said the group included eight men, six women and two children. “They are all Bangladeshis,” he said.

Citing the BGB, Kanaighat Police chief Abdul Alam said: “The detainees are residents of Bagerhat and Kurigram. They’re still in BGB custody and have not yet been handed over to us.”
