A BNP leader's chauffeur has been accused of beating a female police constable with an iron rod in Dhaka's Savar.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Shahinur Kabir said the incident had occurred at the Thana Bus Stand in the Savar municipality area on Sunday afternoon.
Wounded constable Ety Khanam, 38, works at Gazipur’s Kaliakair Police Station. She lives in the Savar Police Station quarters.
She has received first aid at Upazila Health Complex. She also lodged a complaint at the Savar Model Police Station over the incident.
Ety said, "My duty was in the afternoon. I was heading to the Thana Bus Stand on a rickshaw in civil dress to travel to Kaliakair Police Station from there.
“After my rickshaw reached the bus stand, it went close to the private car of BNP’s Savar municipal unit Organising Secretary Ahsan Ullah.
“Because of this, the driver of the car, Sujon Babu, got angry and started shouting. I protested his behaviour and introduced myself. Soon after that, he pulled out an iron rod from the car and started beating me. Both of my legs were bleeding."
She said, “He promptly left with the car when the locals gathered hearing my screams.”
Driver Sujan Babu's mobile was found unavailable when contacted to talk over the complaint.
BNP leader Ahsan Ullah said, "I was not in the car at the time of the incident. I reprimanded the driver after hearing the incident.
“Police also contacted me. I will go to the police station and try to resolve the issue."
Savar Model Police Station chief Jewel Miah did not receive bdnews24.com’s call on the matter.
"We have heard about the incident. Action is being taken,” ASP Shahinur said.
