The body of a drowned farmer has been recovered from the Jamuna River, after a boat carrying 40 farmers capsized in Jamalpur’s Islampur. Two of the farmers are still missing.

The incident took place at 11am on Thursday at Kulkandi jetty, said Islampur Fire Service Station Officer Mazharul Islam.

The dead has been identified as Billal Mandal, 40, a resident of Kulkandi Madhyapara.

Mazharul explained that at least 40 farmers were on their way to work in the crop fields of Char Kulkandi. The boat sank mid-way while crossing the river from the Kulkandi Zero Point jetty.

"While others managed to swim ashore, three individuals went missing," he added.

Upon receiving the news, a Fire Service diving team launched a rescue operation at 11:30am. Later, they recovered the body of Billal Mandal. Efforts are underway to locate the remaining two missing farmers.

Billal’s body has been handed over to his family, confirmed Mazharul.
