Another suspect arrested in the case over the fatal stabbing of Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez has given a “confessional” statement in court.

On Thursday, Md Mahathir Hasan, a fellow student from the same university, “conceded” that he was involved in the murder before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court.

Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain from the prosecution wing of Banani Police Station confirmed the development.

Mahathir, the third suspect in the case, was arrested in Chattogram the previous day and agreed to give a voluntary confession.

Following his consent, the investigating officer, Inspector AKM Moin Uddin of Banani Police Station, filed a request to record his statement, which was granted by Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman.

After the confession, Mahathir was sent to jail.

Earlier on Wednesday, another suspect, Md Al Kamal Sheikh, gave a similar statement while on remand.

He had been produced in court after indicating his intent to confess.

Mahathir was arrested from a flat in Halishahar’s Azad Tower on Wednesday morning.

A total of six suspects have now been arrested in connection with the case.

On Wednesday, Meheraz Islam, the prime suspect in the case, was arrested in Gaibandha while Hridoy Miyazi, the fifth accused, was picked up from his uncle’s house in the Titas area of Cumilla on Monday night.

Three more suspects—Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal, 19, Alvi Hossain Junayed, 19, and Al Amin Sani, 19—were arrested earlier on Sunday midnight by Banani police.

None of these three are students of Primeasia University, nor were they named in the original complaint.

Parvez, a student of the 223rd batch of the Textile Engineering Department, was stabbed to death on the university’s Banani campus on Saturday.

His cousin Humayun Kabir filed a case at Banani Police Station the next morning, naming eight individuals as accused.

The complaint alleges that Mehraz and his associates attacked Parvez with sticks, knives, and machetes.
