A woman named Parveen has died of burns suffered from a gas fire in Gazipur. Her death comes a day after her son succumbed to burn injuries from the same incident.

Parveen died around 4:30am on Sunday, according to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka.

Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute’s emergency department, said Parveen had burns on 32 percent of her body.

The fire broke out during cooking in the Mogorkhal area of Gazipur’s Bason Thana on Apr 27.

Five people were rushed to the burn institute at 10:30pm that day. The following day, a woman named Seema died. Another woman named Taslima died on Apr 29. Parveen’s son Ayan succumbed to his wounds on Saturday morning. A total of four people have died in the incident.

Parveen’s husband Mazharul Islam said that they had been renting the house in the area. He was out when the fire broke out and rushed home.

“As far as I have heard, gas leaked from the cylinder and collected in the house. When the stove was turned on there was a loud noise and a fire broke out. Other people in the house were able to douse the flames with water.”

In response to a question, he said: “Parveen was my wife and Ayan was my son. The rest were tenants in the building.”
