A woman has allegedly hacked her 3-year-old son to death in Narsingdi’s Raipura Upazila.

The incident took place in Amirganj Union’s Dakkhin Mirzanagar area around 8:30pm on Saturday, according to Adil Mahmud, chief of Raipura Police Station.

The boy’s mother, identified as Shirina Begum, fled the scene following the incident and remains at large.

The victim, Anas Miah, was the only child of Dalim Miah, an expatriate living in Saudi Arabia, and his wife Shirina, said Abu Bakkar, a local council member.

Bakkar, citing accounts from neighbours, said Dalim had married Shirina five years ago.

After her husband left for Saudi, Shirina continued living at his family’s home with their son.

On Saturday evening, Shirina allegedly attacked Anas while her mother-in-law was in another room performing Taraweeh, which are special prayers for Ramadan.

“The child’s grandmother rushed to the scene after hearing screams and found her grandson’s body covered in blood,” Bakkar said.

According to Bakkar, Anas's grandmother was not able to suggest any possible motive behind the murder, and said her daughter-in-law has been absconding since the incident.

Adil said, "We recovered the child’s body and sent it for an autopsy.”

“Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses."

No arrests have been made so far, and the suspect remains at large, police said.
