The Rapid Action Battalion has rescued a boy abducted in Chattogram from Brahmanbaria.

The one-and-a-half-year old was rescued early on Thursday morning from Sarail Upazila and brought back to Chattogram.

The RAB says it has arrested two people over the incident – a child snatcher named Dulal Mia, 48, and his customer md Morshed.

The RAB says that Dulal abducted the boy on Feb 19 before selling him to Morshed.

The elite police force says that the detained Morshed had lived as an expatriate in Saudi Arabia for 17 years. He has five daughters, but no sons. He contacted Dulal to abduct a boy for him.

Lt Col Mahbub Alam, a RAB-7 commander, held a press conference over the incident on Thursday.

Mahbub said that Dulal’s name had come up in connection with a recent child abduction in Bhairab as well. Dulal’s wife has been arrested in a case over the incident and is currently in jail.

“Dulal abducted the now rescued child from Chattogram and sold him to Morshed for Tk 100,000.”

Dulal was arrested from Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila on Wednesday, the RAB captain said. The boy was rescued base on information obtained from him. Morshed was then arrested as well.

Mahbub said that a substantial amount of information on child abductions was found on Dulal’s mobile. He used to select his targets while prowling near hospitals, train stations, and other areas. He would contact people looking to purchase children through the messaging app Imo and send them pictures of his targets. Once his customers picked one of them, he would abduct and sell them.

On Feb 17, a woman named Fatema Akhtar brought her five-year-old daughter and one-year-and-three-month-old son to the Chattogram Railway Station on their way to Netrokona, according to Mahbub. There, she became acquainted with Dulal.

Dulal told her that no trains would be leaving Chattogram for Netrokona for the next two days and took her to a house in the Bakalia area. On Feb 19, when Fatema went to the bathroom, Dulal snatched her son and fled.

RAB scoured through CCTV footage of the area and confirmed the abduction before starting surveillance aimed at catching the abductor. On Feb 24, Fatema’s husband filed a case over the incident at Bakalia Police Station.
