A crocodile has been beaten to death by a mob in the Arial Kha River in Madaripur’s Kalkini Upazila.

The incident took place on Saturday in Uttar Andarchar village of Saheb Rampur Union, said Jahangir Alam, Madaripur’s acting forest officer.

Locals said the crocodile entered the Arial Kha River while they were bathing. People gathered and killed it using local weapons and sticks.

Hundreds gathered on the riverbank to witness the scene.

Local Harun Molla said, “Crocodiles have been seen in the Arial Kha River for a while. Crocodiles live in water, killing it this way was not right.”

Masudur Rahman Sardar, coordinator of the Madaripur Wildlife Conservation Movement, said: “Crocodiles live in the river. It was wrong to beat it to death.”

Masudur demanded those involved in the incident be tried under the Wildlife Act.

Jahangir said, “I heard that a crocodile was killed by villagers in the Arial Kha River. I will investigate and take necessary action regarding this.”
